Singapore Airlines has announced compensation offers for passengers affected by a severe turbulence incident on flight SQ321 last month, which resulted in dozens of injuries and one fatality. Passengers who sustained minor injuries are being offered $10,000, while those with serious injuries can negotiate a tailored compensation package.
For passengers requiring long-term medical care, the airline is providing an advance payment of $25,000 to address immediate needs, which will be included in the final settlement. This measure aims to assist those in urgent need following the traumatic event.
The turbulence struck the flight from London to Singapore over Myanmar, leading to an emergency landing in Bangkok. The sudden and extreme turbulence caused unrestrained passengers and crew to be violently thrown, resulting in a 73-year-old passenger’s death from a suspected heart attack and numerous severe injuries, including spinal cord, brain, and skull injuries.
As of June 4, more than two weeks after the incident on May 20, 20 passengers were still receiving medical treatment in Bangkok hospitals. Singapore Airlines has committed to refunding airfares for all passengers on board and providing delay compensation in accordance with EU and British regulations.
A preliminary report from Singapore’s Transport Ministry indicated that a rapid change in gravitational force and a significant altitude drop likely caused the passengers and crew to become airborne. The flight encountered “developing convective activity,” a term for emerging severe weather.
The incident has reignited discussions on seatbelt safety practices, highlighting the importance of keeping seatbelts fastened during flight, even under normal cruising conditions.
