Tesla’s Giga Train, Berlin’s first fully electric shuttle, begins operations, offering a free, eco-friendly commute for workers and the public, supporting Tesla’s renewable energy goals.
Tesla’s new Giga Train, an all-electric shuttle service, is now operational in Germany, linking Erkner station with Tesla Süd. Launched on August 7, 2024, the service marks Berlin and Brandenburg’s first-ever fully electric train, representing a significant step forward in sustainable transportation. Tesla expects the Giga Train to serve around 4,500 passengers daily, offering a free and eco-friendly commute to both Tesla employees and the general public.
The Giga Train, part of Tesla’s broader commitment to renewable energy, is designed to ease road congestion and provide a convenient transportation option for workers commuting to the $5.5 billion Gigafactory in Berlin. This facility, Tesla’s first and only in Europe, plays a crucial role in the company’s global operations, complementing other Gigafactories in the United States and Shanghai, China. The Shanghai site is also set to expand with a new ‘Megafactory’ next year.
Originally scheduled for an April launch, the Giga Train features spacious carriages that can accommodate up to 500 passengers per trip, with 120 seats per carriage. The service is inclusive, with bicycle compartments, ground-level access for passengers with disabilities, and a comprehensive passenger information system.
This electric train service replaces an older model that ran on diesel-electric power, marking a shift toward greener public transportation in the region. Although the Giga Train is operated by Niederbarnimer Eisenbahngesellschaft (NEB) and not built by Tesla, it is leased from Siemens Mobility’s subsidiary, Smart Train Lease. The trains in service are Siemens Mobility Mireo B battery-electric units, highlighting a collaboration between Tesla and Siemens to push the envelope on sustainable travel.
NEB has announced plans to gradually phase out its diesel fleet, with 31 battery-electric and seven hydrogen-powered units set to replace older trains over time. The introduction of the Giga Train aligns seamlessly with Tesla’s overarching goal of accelerating the transition to renewable energy, a point emphasized by Tesla Project Manager Theresa Eggler, who remarked on the importance of the train’s battery-electric design as part of the company’s mission.
As Tesla continues to innovate in the realm of sustainable technology, the Giga Train represents more than just a convenient mode of transport; it embodies the future of clean energy commuting.
