In a significant upgrade to its security offerings, Apple has announced the launch of its own Passwords app, unveiled during WWDC 2024. The app will be included in the upcoming major releases of iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2.
Previously, users could store and sync their passwords using their iCloud accounts, but accessing and managing these passwords required navigating through the Settings app on a Mac or iPhone. The new Passwords app aims to simplify this process, providing a more user-friendly interface and enhanced functionality.
The Passwords app will feature a new navigation column on the left side, making it easier to browse through your password collection. Users can view all stored passwords or filter by specific categories, such as Wi-Fi passwords, passkeys, or codes not linked to any website or service.
In addition to the existing capabilities of iCloud Passwords, which include support for shared passwords, verification codes, and a notes field for each entry, the Passwords app introduces a streamlined approach to password management. This dedicated app is designed to encourage users to take full advantage of iCloud Passwords for storing sensitive information securely.
The introduction of the Passwords app highlights Apple’s ongoing commitment to user security and privacy, making it easier for users to manage and protect their digital identities.
