NTA Cancels UGC-NET June 2024 Exam Due to Integrity Concerns, Hands Over Case to CBI

The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Tuesday that it has canceled the UGC-NET June 2024 examination, conducted across India on June 18, due to concerns over the exam’s integrity. The decision was made following inputs from the National Cyber Crime Threat Analysis Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, indicating a potential compromise.

The matter has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough investigation, officials said. The NTA has assured that a fresh examination will be conducted to maintain transparency and fairness in the selection process.

Approximately 908,000 candidates appeared for the UGC-NET June 2024, which is essential for awarding Junior Research Fellowships, entry into PhD programs, and appointments as assistant professors. The exam covered 83 subjects.

In a statement, the Union Education Ministry said, “To ensure the highest level of transparency and sanctity of the examination process, the UGC-NET June 2024 examination has been canceled.”

The NTA, responsible for conducting various entrance exams including engineering, medical, and management courses, as well as the UGC-NET, has been under scrutiny recently due to alleged irregularities in the NEET 2024, the nationwide entrance exam for medical colleges.

On Monday, the NTA had announced that it had successfully conducted the UGC-NET June 2024 examination. However, the specifics of the information obtained by the cyber crime unit or the nature of the compromise were not disclosed by the education ministry.
