The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to Bhavani Revanna in a kidnapping case related to sexual abuse allegations against her son, suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Hassan MP, Prajwal Revanna. The bail conditions restrict her from entering the districts of Hassan and Mysuru.
Justice Krishna S Dixit, while issuing the order, emphasized the importance of avoiding a media trial and cautioned against the unwarranted arrests of women.
Bhavani Revanna faces accusations under IPC sections 64(A), 365, 109, and 120(B), relating to the kidnapping of a woman who her son, Prajwal Revanna, allegedly sexually abused. Her husband, HD Revanna, was also arrested in connection with the same case on April 29 but was later released on bail by a Special Court for Elected Representatives.
The case, filed on April 28 at the Holenarasipura town police station, involves accusations of sexual abuse against HD Revanna and his son, Prajwal Revanna, by their house help.
On June 1, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) issued a notice to Bhavani, asking her to be present at her home for questioning regarding the kidnapping case. However, when SIT officials arrived at Bhavani’s residence, ‘Chennambika Nilaya,’ she was not present. The SIT subsequently carried out searches across multiple locations, including Mysuru, Hassan, Bengaluru, Mandya, and Ramanagara, but she was not found.
The JD(S) first family, particularly former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda’s son HD Revanna, his wife Bhavani, and son Prajwal, has been embroiled in controversy since explicit videos surfaced on April 21. Prajwal, who lost the Lok Sabha elections from the Hassan constituency as an NDA candidate, fled to Germany on April 27. He returned to India on May 31 and was arrested by the SIT at Bengaluru airport on charges of rape.
HD Revanna, Holenarasipura JD(S) MLA and Prajwal’s father, is currently out on bail in the same case.
The Karnataka government formed the SIT to investigate the cases against Prajwal based on a recommendation from Karnataka State Commission for Women chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhary, who wrote to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging an investigation.
