News which Matters.
Severe flooding and landslides have wreaked havoc in Assam, resulting in the tragic loss of over 30 lives and displacing more than 1.61 lakh people across 15 districts. The recent catastrophe has struck hardest in Karimganj, where 1,52,133 individuals are grappling with the deluge, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
In a devastating incident, a landslide in the Badarpur area of Karimganj district claimed the lives of five people, including a mother and her three young daughters, along with a three-year-old boy. The landslide, occurring in Gainachora village late Tuesday night, adds to the grim toll following Cyclone Remal’s devastating impact on the state since May.
Superintendent of Police for Karimganj district, Partha Protim Das, recounted the tragic rescue operation: “Last night at 12.45 am, we received information about a landslide in the Gainachora (Bendargool) village area. Our teams rushed to the spot and, after three hours of intense effort, recovered five bodies from the debris.”
The victims were identified as Roymun Nessa (55) and her daughters Sahida Khanam (18), Jahida Khanam (16), and Hamida Khanam (11). The young boy, Mehdi Hassan, was identified as the son of Mahimuddin.
The repercussions of the floods extend beyond loss of life, affecting 1,378.64 hectares of crops and leaving 54,877 animals vulnerable. Currently, 470 villages spanning 24 revenue circles remain submerged, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Efforts are underway to provide relief to the affected populace, with 5,114 individuals seeking refuge in 43 relief camps. However, damage to critical infrastructure, including embankments, roads, and bridges, poses significant challenges to rescue and recovery operations. Concerns are heightened as the Kopili river at Kampur flows perilously above danger levels, threatening further inundation.
The districts worst affected by the floods include Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority continues to coordinate relief efforts amid ongoing challenges posed by the natural calamity.
