Mumbai Airport Boosts Passenger Experience with Major DigiYatra Expansion

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), managed by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), has announced a significant expansion of its DigiYatra digital gateway program, aimed at enhancing the travel experience for both DigiYatra and non-DigiYatra passengers. This initiative is set to transform the airport’s capacity and efficiency, enabling seamless travel for thousands of passengers daily.

The number of terminal entry points (eGates) at CSMIA has surged from 24 to 68, making it the highest number of eGates at kerbside or landside in the country. This expansion has boosted the processing capacity of Terminal 2 (T2) to 7,440 passengers per hour and Terminal 1 (T1) to 2,160 passengers per hour, tripling the current capacity. The increased efficiency has reduced wait times to under one minute at the kerbside, ensuring swift entry for travelers.

“CSMIA’s Digital Gateway combines technology, process excellence, big data analytics, and design thinking to deliver an exemplary passenger experience,” said a CSMIA spokesperson. The spokesperson highlighted that this significant increase in terminal entry points was achieved solely through advanced technology without major civil works.

The Digital Gateway at T2 now includes 28 dedicated DigiYatra eGates alongside 28 dedicated non-DigiYatra eGates. Terminal 1 (T1) features six dedicated DigiYatra eGates and six non-DigiYatra eGates, further enhancing the airport’s overall capacity and passenger experience.

An additional 118 eGates are being deployed at the Pre-embarkation Security Check (PESC) area at T2. These eGates utilize biometric validation, allowing DigiYatra passengers to pass through without needing to show their ticket, boarding pass, or ID. The Digital Gateway leverages IoT sensors and biometric face pods integrated with the DigiYatra foundation to efficiently identify and guide passengers, further minimizing processing time for non-DigiYatra passengers.

To assist first-time DigiYatra passengers, “Digi Buddies” have been deployed to guide them in using self-service systems such as DigiYatra, CUSS, CUPPS, and SBD. Additionally, AI and ML-enabled cameras will enhance the overall security system at the kerbside.

“We are excited to announce the significant expansion of our DigiYatra facility on our digital gateway platform at CSMIA,” the spokesperson said. “By increasing the number of eGates and integrating advanced biometric systems, we are committed to ensuring swift, secure, and seamless travel for all our passengers.”

In response to the increasing passenger traffic demand and forecasted growth, CSMIA is focusing on real-time information sharing and improved decision-making processes. The launch of the digital gateway program marks a transformative journey for the airport, aiming to elevate passenger interaction zones with a robust digital platform and dynamic content displays.

CSMIA’s dedication to pioneering technological advancements sets it on the path to becoming a global leader in airport innovation, enhancing efficiency and convenience for all passengers.
