The arrest of a Chinese national after his speedboat illegally entered Taipei harbour has raised alarms in Taiwan, with senior officials suggesting the individual, identified as a former navy captain, may have been probing the island’s defences.
Taiwan’s coast guard apprehended the man on Sunday in Tamsui, a coastal neighbourhood, after his boat navigated into a river leading to Taipei. This incident unfolded amid escalating tensions between Taiwan and China, with Beijing asserting territorial claims over the democratically governed island, a stance Taipei firmly rebuffs.
Kuan Bi-ling, head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council overseeing the coast guard, revealed that the detained individual exhibited a polished demeanor and had previously served as a captain in the Chinese navy. She highlighted 18 similar incidents over the past year, predominantly involving Taiwan-controlled islands adjacent to the Chinese coast, suggesting a pattern that cannot be overlooked.
Taiwanese Defence Minister Wellington Koo echoed concerns, characterizing the speedboat incident as another manifestation of China’s “grey zone” tactics, designed to undermine Taiwan without engaging in overt conflict. Such tactics, Koo emphasized, demand perpetual vigilance and readiness to counter potential threats.
China’s Taiwan Affairs Office and defence ministry have yet to comment on the arrest or the broader context of tensions between the two sides. The incident follows a recent case where two Taiwanese fishermen inadvertently crossed into Chinese waters near the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands, underscoring the persistent volatility in the region.
