Swallowing Hope Thousands Seek Asthma Relief in Hyderabad’s Ancient Fish Medicine

Every summer, the city of Hyderabad transforms into a beacon of hope for asthma sufferers as they partake in a unique and ancient tradition. Thousands gather to swallow live fish filled with a secret herbal paste, a remedy believed to offer relief from respiratory ailments.

The origin of this practice dates back to 1845. According to legend, a wandering saint bestowed a miraculous herbal formula upon Veeranna Goud, a resident of Hyderabad, instructing him to use it to treat asthma patients free of charge. Today, the Bathini family, Goud’s descendants, continue this tradition, keeping the herbal formula a closely guarded secret passed down through generations. Kakarna Alkananda, who helps oversee the distribution, says, “My great-great-grandfather passed this secret formula to his sons, and they to their sons. Now, we are the fifth generation to keep the tradition.”

On a day chosen by astrological calculations, participants purchase a live fish from a government stall on-site for around 40 rupees (about 50 cents). The fish is then taken to an attendant working with the Bathini family, who stuffs its mouth with a yellow herbal paste before helping the participant swallow it whole. It is believed that the fish travels down the throat, clearing phlegm and congestion.

Despite objections from scientific communities regarding the treatment’s efficacy and sanitary concerns, many claim significant improvements in their health. Aash Mohammed, who traveled more than 20 hours from New Delhi, shared, “My mother has been taking this treatment for seven years now, and it has brought her much relief. She’s breathing easier, and her attacks have become less frequent.”

Due to a lawsuit by a local organization aimed at dispelling superstitions, the Bathini family refers to the treatment as “prasadam” (an offering) rather than a medicinal cure. The local government supports the event by setting up a makeshift structure and ensuring security and sanitation measures. Thousands of people participated in the “prasadam” this year, according to the organizers.

The enduring tradition of swallowing live fish with herbal paste in Hyderabad highlights a fascinating blend of cultural heritage and faith. Despite controversies, this ancient practice continues to draw thousands seeking relief from asthma each year, showcasing the powerful connection between belief and health.
