In a significant shift in the automotive market, Tata Punch has reclaimed its position as the top selling car model, surpassing Maruti Swift, which had dominated in May 2024. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the passenger vehicle industry observed a 3% growth, reaching 3.7 lakh units in June 2024, with Tata Punch, Maruti Swift, Hyundai Creta, and Maruti Ertiga leading the top slots.

Tata Punch sold 18,238 units in June 2024, marking a remarkable resurgence to the top of the sales charts. This resurgence can be attributed to its affordable pricing, advanced features, and a Bharat NCAP 5-star safety rating, making it a preferred choice among buyers. Maruti Swift, which had topped the sales charts in May 2024, fell to the second position with 16,422 units sold, reflecting a 16% month-on-month decline, according to data from Autopunditz.

Maruti Suzuki, however, continues to dominate the third-largest automobile market, retaining six spots in the top 10 best-selling car models list. Hyundai Creta secured the third position with 16,293 units sold in June, showing a 12% month-on-month growth. Maruti Ertiga followed closely, recording an increase of 15% month-on-month with 15,902 units sold, placing it fourth.

Maruti Baleno and the New WagonR occupied the fifth and sixth positions with sales of 14,895 units and 13,790 units, respectively, in June 2024. Maruti Dzire and Vitara Brezza also featured prominently, ranking seventh and eighth with 13,421 and 13,172 units sold, respectively.

Mahindra managed to secure the ninth position in the top 10 list, selling 12,307 units of the Scorpio model despite an 11% month-on-month drop in June. Tata Nexon rounded out the top 10 with sales of 12,066 units in the same month.

The automotive manufacturers are fiercely competing by offering discounts and other incentives to boost sales and secure spots among the top-ten sellers. This competition is reflected in the dynamic changes in sales rankings month after month.

FADA President Manish Raj Singhania commented on the industry’s current state, saying, “The budget’s emphasis on employment, skilling, MSMEs, and the middle class is particularly relevant for our industry. The Employment Linked Incentive scheme and the enhancement of Mudra loans are encouraging developments that will support job creation and entrepreneurship, leading to increased consumer spending power.”

The automotive market’s robust performance in June 2024, led by Tata Punch’s resurgence and Maruti Suzuki’s continued dominance, indicates a positive trend for the industry, driven by strategic pricing, product features, and competitive market dynamics. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how manufacturers adapt and compete in the coming months.
